The sun has finally started shining in this strange season they're calling summer. I must admit that at times I was thinking I'd be better off in the Northern Hemisphere where at least i would be able to play in the snow. The other day I watched this incredible video of some Northern folk skating through the frozen lakes and rivers of the Arctic circle and reassured myself that although this is so mesmerisingly awesome, the cold would probably start to override that feeling after the first 10km and i'm probably better off paddling around in the unfrozen ocean
Although I did always fancy my self as a bit of a speed skater when i was a kid.

Just read this great article in the New York Times on the importance of slowing down and shutting off. even if it's just for a few hours. it's definitely worth reading.

If you went to a picnic in the park and someone served you a piece of bread with a chunk of fish on it and nothing else you'd think it was a pretty lousy picnic. When we caught this guy last week in the Mountains and cooked him right there on the river bank it was one of the best lunches we'd had in a long while.

RECLAIM THE STREETS

A full plate of domestic responsibilities has kept me pretty tied to the house over the winter. during this time i managed to reclaim a small patch of ground out the back of my place that was otherwise being put to waste by a bunch of weeds and out of date ornamental plants. A couple of weeks ago i pulled out the shovel and got to work clearing it and planting a full assortment of vegetables. With the warmer weather hanging around the garden has been pumping and last night i had my first salad picked entirely from the patch. good times ahead.

to most outsiders the idea of snow in Australia is a fantasy. It can actually snow quite allot here, sometimes. But as the season of winter in the Land Down Under is such a short one, you really pay a premium price to enjoy it. Every year i curse the resort operators for their extortionate prices for everything from hotdogs to helli skiing but when you catch that first glimpse of the frosty peaks of Kosiosko you can forget for just a moment about the cost and remember how magic the snowy mountains can be.

Enjoy it while it lasts. It might not be here for much longer.
